Maa Cultural Week, Celebrating Rich Heritage of The Maa People

The Maa cultural week is an extraordinary annual cultural event bringing together rich heritage of the Maa-speaking communities in Kenya and Tanzania aiming to preserve and showcase the traditions, customs and identity of the Maa Community. This Vibrant celebration showcase unique African Traditions, Arts, and Customs of the Maasai, Samburu, Ilchamus and Ilkeekonyokie Maasai.

The event typically kicks off with a grand opening ceremony featuring traditional performances of folk songs, chants and dances. Delegates, Community elders and leaders join in symbolizing unity and respect for the Rich Maa heritage. The week ends with a Grand finale procession where all participants come together in colorful and energetic display of unity.

 

Where does Maa Cultural week Event Takes Place?

The festivities span across several counties in Kenya where the Maa communities reside, including Narok, Kajiado, Laikipia, Marsabit, Samburu and Baringo. Each year at a specific period, a host county is selected, transforming it into a cultural hub where thousands gather to celebrate their shared heritage. From 6th to 9th of November 2024 the Grand Celebration event was set against the stunning backdrop of Samburu National Reserve in Samburu County.

 

How to Access counties offering Maa cultural week event

By road: The five counties offering The Maa cultural week experience (Narok, Kajiado, Samburu, Baringo and Laikipia) are all accessible from Nairobi, Mombasa and any other counties in Kenya by road network.

By Air: You can take a domestic flight (Safari link or Air Kenya) from Nairobi, Wilson airport to either of the Airstrips; Olkiombo Airstrip in Narok County, Nanyuki Airstrip in Laikipia, Samburu Airstrip in Samburu County and Amboseli Airstrip in Kajiado County) depending on which county is hosting the event.

 

Attractions at Maa cultural week

The Maa cultural week has a lot of attractions to offer, including;

  • Maasai Manyatta: This manyattas are made of grass, wood and Cow dung. They are made in special way ensuring no leakages during rainy seasons. The Maa communities have been living in manyattas since the past.
  • Traditional beadwork and Craft display: You will get to see the beautiful handmade accessories like colorful beadworks, Maasai Jewelry, Clothing, Gourds, Leather shoes, Spears and Shields.
  • Rite of passage ceremonies: During the Maa cultural week you will get an opportunity to experience the famous Eunoto ceremony where young Maasai warriors’ transition to elder warriors and weeding ceremonies.
  • Cultural performance: The cultural dances and songs are an attraction by itself. You will witness how Maasai warriors skillfully jump and sing with moves that will rob your attention.

 

Activities to participate during Maa cultural week

Throughout the week, visitors and participants experience a variety of activities that welcome guests and travelers to join in. This activities include;

  • Traditional Dances and Music, The air comes alive with the rhythmic beats of drums, traditional chants, and the iconic Maasai jumping dance, known as Adumu. These performances are not just entertainment but a retelling of history, myths, and legends passed down through generations.
  • Cultural Exhibitions and Artifacts, Visitors explore displays of traditional artifacts, including beadworks, spears, shields, and clothing. Women showcase their intricate beadwork, known for its vibrant colors and symbolic meanings.
  • Storytelling and Oral Traditions, Elders gather in circles, sharing folktales and oral histories that have kept the Maa culture alive for centuries. These sessions provide invaluable insights into the community's beliefs, values, and ways of life.
  • Traditional Cuisine, A feast for the senses, attendees' sample authentic Maa dishes, such as roasted meat “Nyama Choma”, milk, and traditional soups infused with herbs.
  • Cultural Competitions, which involve worriers and participants from the community in spear-throwing contests, herding challenges, camel derby, cattle roping and beauty pageants featuring traditional attire to add an element of fun and competition.
  • Workshops and Discussions, mainly focusing on key issues like land rights, education, climate change, and the role of culture in modern society. Youths and elders engage in meaningful dialogue, ensuring cultural continuity.

Where to stay during the Maa cultural week will depend on which Maasai residing county is hosting the Grand event.

Cultural Manyatta (home stays): Different counties offer cultural manyatta that you can stay during the grand celebration event. like Loisaba Community Manyatta (Laikipia County) and Maji Moto Eco Camp (Narok County).

Lodges: Some lodges are situated near the events designated areas like, The Mara serena safari lodge (Narok county), and Sarova Shaba (Samburu County) which offer cultural guided tours all year round.

Community-Run Campsites: like Enkewa Mara camp (Narok County)

We recommend you book earlier as these accommodations fill up quickly during the Maa cultural week.
