Lamu or Lamu Town is a small town located on Lamu Island along the Indian Ocean in the coastal Kenya region, it is situated northeast of Mombasa. Lamu is famously known for being the oldest and best-preserved Swahili settlement in East Africa, also its Swahili architecture which is a fusion of the Bantu, Arabs, European, Persian and Indian traditions. The island is also home to 23 mosques including the Riyadha Mosque which was built in the 1900, and also it is a donkey sanctuary.
Tourism is a major local economic activity in Lamu which has gradually fuel the local economy, it is a famous destination for backpackers. Lamu hosts The Lamu cultural festival which happens in August, a colorful carnival which features; Cultural Dances, Crafts, Dhow racing, Donkey racing and other more.
