Tana River is a county in the former Coastal Province of Kenya. It is named after the longest river in Kenya, Tana River. Apart from the river there are several seasonal rivers such as the Galana, which flows in a west-East direction from Kitui and Makueni counties, draining in tana River and finally the Indian Ocean.

Tana river is known for its dry climate and erratic rainfall, it also offers diverse ecosystem and rich cultural heritage. Some of the major ethnic groups in Tana River County include the Somalis, Pokomo, Orma people, and the Wardey.
