SIBILOI NATIONAL PARK

Samburu

Sibiloi National Park is located in northern Kenya, near the eastern shore of Lake Turkana. The park was established to protect and preserve the important paleontological and archaeological sites found in the area. Lake Turkana, also known as the Jade Sea, is the world's largest desert lake, and its surroundings are rich in both natural and cultural heritage. The park is renowned for its fossil deposits, including the remains of early hominids and prehistoric animals. Notably, the area has yielded fossils of Homo erectus, an early human ancestor. One of the most famous fossil sites within the park is Koobi Fora, where numerous hominid fossils have been discovered. These fossils have provided valuable insights into human evolution. While not as well-known for its wildlife as some other Kenyan parks, Sibiloi National Park is home to various species such as Grant's gazelle, Beisa oryx, gerenuk, crocodiles, and various bird species.

The park's eastern boundary is formed by Lake Turkana, which is the world's largest alkaline lake. The lake supports diverse aquatic life and is an essential breeding ground for Nile crocodiles and various bird species. The region is also home to indigenous communities, such as the El Molo people. The El Molo are one of the smallest ethnic groups in Kenya, and their traditional lifestyle is closely tied to Lake Turkana.Visitors to Sibiloi National Park can explore the fossil sites, enjoy the scenic landscapes, and learn about the unique cultural heritage of the area.
